ADVANTAGES OF HYDROSPRIGGING

The use of hydraulic planting machines, arranged to be able to spray disc or roller machines cannot keep up with the hydraulic ones if the rooting and transplanting live sprigs or “stolons” and nourishing wood fibre mulch in the very same procedure has been promoted by the efforts to build and make use of high quality turfgrasses. Known to the most for their capacity to quickly and regularly plant wildflowers, seeds and consolidating and stabilising species, hydroseeding and hydrosprigging hydraulic machines have been widely employed in establishing warm season turfs (like Bermuda grass, Kikuyu grass, etc.) through sprigs. Though still broadly used, the traditional time of the stolons is considered.

Some disadvantages of traditional mechanic sprigging:

- a worse coverage with the same amount of sprigs that are hand-planted
- the finished work results in: a mess, displaced stones; open furrows, final “row-planting” appearance
- high percentage of damage to the irrigation system
- low survival rate of the sprigs
- stolons cannot be planted in wavy and terraced land
- the whole process is limited by the nature and the moisture of the ground
- grass covering requires long periods

The hydraulic planting, also called hydrosprigging, is however much more versatile and gets excellent results due to the addition of 100% of wood fibre mulch to keep the sprigs stuck to the ground. Until the sprigs get steady and take root, the mulch protects them from the soil moisture and from bad weather.

Here are some important advantages of the hydrosprigging:

  • no interference with the soil, its moisture or any sort of obstacles
  • more uniform planting and higher survival rate of the sprigs
  • through the pipings, the machines can plant up to 150 metres away
  • no damage to the irrigation system, paths, flowerbeds, greens, fountains, etc.
  • no readjustment by hand is required except keeping the area clean and manicured
  • no extra expenses and shorter time to make use of the sports facilities.

This technique enables you to grass cover large areas in 45 days: this is one of the main reasons for its diffusion.

Every intervention on sports facilities requires different building techniques and, above all, different cultivation substrata. Anyway, both the hydreseeding and the hydrosprigging offer clear advantages compared to the traditional seeding and sprigging.

A mass of stolons, water, mulch, fertiliser and rooting hormones are mixed and sprayed onto the ground using a mobile piping. The operator can control the whole process and ensure total coverage of the area, even in land with unusual features. He sprinkles the stolons away from the obstacles and follows precise tracks where a specific grass variety is required. When sprayed, this painting of sprigs and mulch resists rain and irrigation erosion, warms the temperature of the soil and helps the grass to take root and grow quickly.
The soil activity, the fertiliser and the regular watering make the mulch decompose while the turf establishes and grass covers the whole area quickly. The Eco Green Service hydrosprigs with the best turfgrass varieties from all over the world.
